The Undergraduate French Program

The Major in French

The major in French is a program consisting of ten, three-credit courses in which students pursue studies in French beyond the beginning and intermediate levels. In consultation with departmental advisors, students combine their work with other academic disciplines and develop particular strengths and interests in French literature, language, and culture.

Prerequisites

  • Successful completion of French 234, 240, 241, or equivalent placement.

5 Required Courses:

  • French 300 (Intensive Review of French Grammar)
  • French 310 (French Phonetics)
  • French 326 (Introduction to French Literature)
  • French 350 (Advanced Grammar & Composition)
    OR
  • French 352 (French for Business & Journalism)
  • French 375 (Intermediate French Conversation

3 Literature Courses from the following:

  • French 450 (French Literature of the Middle Ages)
  • French 455 (French Literature of the Renaissance)
  • French 460 (French Literature of the 17th and 18th Centuries)
  • French 465 (French Literature of the 19th Century)
  • French 470 (French Literature of the 20th Century)

2 Elective Courses from the following:

  • French 376 (Advanced French Conversation)
  • French 410 (Survey of French Culture I)
  • French 420 (Survey of French Culture II)
  • French 430 (La France d’aujourd’hui)
  • French 431 (French Speaking World outside of France)
  • French 432 (Francophone African Literature)
  • French 440 (Studies in French Culture)
  • French 480 (Studies in French Literature)

KU Study Abroad Programs:
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in study abroad programs. Some credit from these programs is applicable to the minor. Students should consult with departmental advisors and the Office of Study Abroad (108 Lippincott Hall, 864-3742) about the following options:

  • Semester Abroad in Angers
  • Academic Year in Besançon

Students are invited to meet with faculty members in French to discuss the major, independent study, and honors in French.
