Teaching Italian at KU: Graduate Teaching Assistantships and Lectureships

Graduate Teaching Assistantships in Italian are offered, upon approval by the Provost Office, to graduate students pursuing PhDs in closely related fields such as linguistics or education. Also eligible for these positions are graduate students for whom it can be demonstrated that a graduate teaching assistantship in Italian will complement their educational programs and/or improve their profiles for academic appointments after graduation. Graduate Teaching Assistants must be enrolled in at least six graduate hours. Typical teaching appointments are for one five-hour elementary course or two three-hour intermediate courses per semester. All Italian GTAs work under the supervision of the Italian Program Coordinator. GTAs are paid approximately $12,000 for the academic year and receive tuition remission for courses taken at the University. Applications for Graduate Teaching Assistantships in Italian are due in mid-March for the following year.

Lectureships in Italian are offered to graduate students in other departments such as International Studies, Political Science and American Studies, and to qualified teachers of Italian. Teaching loads vary. All Italian Lecturers work under the supervision of the Italian Program Coordinator. Lecturers are paid approximately $4700 for each 5-hour course and $2800 for each 3-hour course. There is no tuition remission for courses taken at the university, but Lecturers can enroll in courses as in-state students. Applications for Lectureships in Italian are due in mid-March for the following year. For additional information contact Marina de Fazio at defazio@ku.edu.
