Graduate Study Abroad Opportunities

The Department of French & Italian strongly advises its graduate students to study abroad during the completion of their graduate degrees. Below is a list of such opportunities:

Graduate program assistants for the Summer Language Institute in Paris, Strasbourg, and Florence
Each summer the Department sponsors six-and eight- week study programs in Paris, Strasbourg, and Florence for undergraduates and employs graduate program assistants to help with the recruitment, language instruction, and acculturation of students. Support covers the assistant’s expenses while abroad and offers a stipend. Announced by the program directors in late September or early October for mid June-July of the following year.

Graduate Direct Exchanges in Clermont-Ferrand and Strasbourg
Direct Exchange Program, one academic year of independent study, in Clermont-Ferrand or Strasbourg. Scholars receive tuition and monthly stipend for room and board and additional fees. This is a campus-wide competition; applications are available in the early fall at the Office of International Programs.

Teaching exchanges in Besançon and in Créteil
The Department selects one graduate student annually for teaching assistantships in English at the Université de Franche-Comté in Besançon and at the Université de Paris Créteil in Créteil. The monthly stipend (nine months) generously covers living expenses while offering graduate students an invaluable experience working and studying abroad. Announced by the chair of French and Italian in fall, for the following academic year.

Graduate program assistant in Besançon
In conjunction with the Office of Study Abroad, the Department selects one graduate student annually to assist with the administrative aspects of the undergraduate exchange program in Besançon. Duties include assisting the program coordinator at the IUT, arranging and supervising cultural activities for program participants, advising KU students with course work at the UFC, and helping UFC students who will study at KU the following year. The program assistant may also make arrangements to teach English at a local lycée. The monthly stipend is for half-time employment, and there are opportunities for subsidized housing and eating privileges at university restaurants. Announced by the Office of Study Abroad in fall, for the following academic year

Cornell and Springer Grants
Announced by the chair of French and Italian in early spring for summer research in France, intended for M.A. and Ph.D. students with a feasible research proposal.

The Department and the University also assist students in applying to other outside scholarship programs and outside grants such as Fulbright grants and French government sponsored grants.
