Overview of M.A. in French

The Department of French and Italian offers a comprehensive graduate program (M.A. and Ph.D.) in French and Francophone language, literature, and culture. Our faculty is dynamic, professionally active, and committed to excellence in scholarship and teaching. Although the major emphasis of teaching and research is French and Francophone literature, the department also offers courses in literary theory, cultural studies, and film. The department offers a balanced emphasis on all periods from medieval through twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Our students represent a diverse group, and we encourage equally applicants from traditional and nontraditional backgrounds.  Excellent facilities, strong library holdings, and a faculty dedicated to both teaching and research assure students of a challenging and professional graduate preparation.

Work toward the M.A. degree consists of a traditional curriculum providing important foundational knowledge. The M.A. in French is awarded upon the completion of 30 credit hours of course work (which includes either a thesis or two seminars) and oral and written examinations covering all areas of French literature. Students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a second foreign language.

Non-degree seeking enrollment option for non-graduate pursuits:

If you completed a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA and wish to take an upcoming course in the department ad hoc, please note that fluency in the French language will be necessary to succeed in graduate-level courses.  Please detail your preparedness and motivation toward taking coursework in the Department of French, Francophone and Italian Studies in your statement of purpose.

Non-degree seeking option for students who do not meet graduate program prerequisites:

Students who have studied in appropriate fields and/or gained appropriate in-country experience with language skills, but who lack sufficient prerequisites, may consider applying to KU Graduate Studies and the Department as non-degree-seeking (NDS) students in order to make up any gaps in academic study. After meeting the prerequisites with a 3.0 GPA or better, NDS students may apply for admission to the French graduate degree programs.

Consult with the Department's Director of Graduate Studies before beginning any remedial work.

*Completion of NDS coursework to fulfill prerequisites will not guarantee graduate program admission as graduate applications are considered holistically.
